Paul Hickey, MD

Dr. Paul Hickey received his BA degree from Yale University and his MD degree from Columbia University. He trained in surgery at Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center, New York, and in cardiac surgery at the National Heart and Lung Institute, National Institutes of Health, Bethesda, Maryland. He then trained in anesthesia and cardiac anesthesia at the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston before joining the faculty in the Department of Anesthesia at Children’s Hospital Boston in 1981. Dr. Hickey assumed his present position in 1992.
His clinical work is concentrated in pediatric cardiac anesthesia as a member of the Division of Cardiac Anesthesia at Children’s. He has authored more than 100 papers, chapters and reviews, particularly in the area of cardiac anesthesia. His research interests include brain injury with cardiac surgery in children, pain and stress responses in children, and the pathophysiology and modulation of inflammatory responses to surgery and cardiopulmonary bypass involving leukocyte and endothelial adhesion. He is a past Editor of the journals of Anesthesia and Analgesia and the Journal of Cardiothoracic Anesthesia.
