Stephen Carson
Associate Director Jameel World Education Lab Massachusetts Institute of Technology
Stephen is the Associate Director for the Jameel World Education Lab at MIT, where he works with educational systems around the world to improve the effectiveness of their offerings and address global educational challenges at scale.
Prior to joining J-WEL, Stephen served as the Director of Operations and Director of Program Business Development for OPENPediatrics, and in that role worked with the OPENPediatrics leadership and staff to improve content publication processes and systems, build awareness and use of OPENPediatrics, communicate with internal and external stakeholders, manage the program's intellectual property functions, and build program sustainability.
Stephen previously served as the Director of Communications and External Relations for MIT OpenCourseWare. He also served as the first president of the OpenCourseWare Consortium from 2008 to 2011, where he oversaw the incorporation of the organization as an independent non-profit, secured funding to support its operation and helped grow membership to include more than 280 universities globally. He served on the Consortium’s board of directors from 2008 to 2012.
Prior to joining the MIT OpenCourseWare team, Steve served as Associate Director of Emerson College’s Division of Continuing Education in Boston, where – in addition to managing core academic activities of the division – he developed and taught Emerson’s first asynchronous, Web-based distance learning course. Steve earned his MFA in Creative Writing from Emerson College, and taught creative and expository writing there for five years.
